Jupiter Island Florida, completion 2009

Located on a barrier island in Florida, this project is intended as a compelling gathering place during the winter months for a large, evolving family. The program required a design both large enough to accommodate three generations for a weekend and intimate enough for the owners to occupy on their own. The solution creates a grouping of small, individual buildings stitched together with roof structures to become a generous courtyard compound.

As this large interior lot has no specific view; the design is organized to create both a foreground and distant background focal point. The corridor-free pavilions house looks out at the ever-changing light of a tropical landscape across a central swimming pool. The formal podium on which the house rests and the broken second floor structure that partially spans the courtyard defines its view. All of its major rooms share this view, and some spaces enjoy three and even four exposures, while from the street the façade is a subtle, quiet welcome, belying the dynamic views and forms within.
