This is a guesthouse for a guesthouse. Used on family holidays, this simple structure organizes three separate guest suites within two levels. The house mimics the adjacent colonial main house--detailing was purposefully kept sparse. The steep pitch of the roof readily sheds water into concealed gutters while uniquely defining the interior spaces on the second (attic) floor.
All north/south walls and ceilings were covered with pecky cypress(a fallen tree harvested from underwater in Florida swamps) as a nod to the client's childhood memory of the former house. East/west walls are white plaster on board, creating distinct contrasting planes between the two materials. The custom floor to ceiling windows are covered with louvered shutters that pocket into the exterior walls. The main elevation curtain wall is sheltered from western sun by a similar super-sized louver. A sunken two-story living room is at the core of the house and acts as a natural gathering spot for conversation and television.
